Brookside Barn
Extension to an existing barn conversion in Sevenoaks Weald with a desire to create a better connection to the surrounding woodland and countryside - Under Construction
Sited within the Green Belt, it was important to present a proposal to the Local Authority to extend the building that demonstrated that it would not be 'overdevelopment' of the site and as instead suited to its rural context.
To do this, several proposals were explored during the feasibility stage ensuring that the final design met both the client brief and planning legislation.
A particular concept that was a driver for the design during the feasibility stage was the vision of sitting in the lounge under a double-height space in front of a freestanding fireplace surrounded by glazing with the grounds and woodland beyond encapsulating the rural setting in one image.
This materialised into a side extension that mimics a traditional catslide roof creating a double-height space that allows the resident to open the doors to the garden in the summer bringing the outside in, and in the winter sit in front of the fireplace and observe the changing seasons.
