Country Manor
Renovation and restoration of 1930s country house in Trottiscliffe within the Green Belt and an Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty - Completed
The brief was to fully renovate this country estate inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement to bring it into the 21st century by addressing the internal layout.
Working with a period property presents many challenges, for instance, determining what elements are to be protected compared to those which are later additions, and assessing the impact any intervention may have on the character of the house.
Returning the layout to its original intention was the first decision, removing recent interventions and subdivisions to restore the kitchen as the heart of the house.
Now completed, as you walk around the house admiring the craftsmanship of the joinery and fixtures, it is difficult to distinguish which elements are new and not original; evidence that the time spent carefully considering every alteration and ensuring it enhances and does not harm the original property was time well spent.
From the Designer, ‘In every room, there are features that demonstrate exemplary craftsmanship and design, causing the brief to quickly evolve from renovation to restoration.’
