Location

Trottiscliffe

Scope

Renovation

Renovation of a distinctive 1930s country house inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement located in Trottiscliffe within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty managing the project from concept to competition.

Without any recent work or maintenance, the brief quickly evolved from renovation to restoration as a number of the original handcrafted features were hidden or damaged and the layout had been impacted by various subdivisions.

We first restored the layout to its original intention by removing a number of subdivisions to help restore the kitchen as the heart of the house with the impressive open fireplace a focal point once again. Some modern interventions were made, such as opening up the landing to remove the narrow and dark corridor to the master bedroom which now provides views over the Kent Downs. Previously owned by a jeweller, even the safe room was kept and converted into a unique downstairs WC as a reminder of the property's past.
